Bolt and Phelps performed, but let’s not forget these brave women who defied the odds to win our hearts.

The Olympics have ended with records being broken and history being made all throughout the 16 days. Yes- Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps have been the star athletes – but the women have also put in some stellar performances this Olympics in Rio. Here are 5 memorable performances by women at Rio 2016.
Simone Biles is a 19-year-old American gymnast with a very inspiring story. The early years of Simone’s life were very difficult. Her siblings and she were in and out of foster homes due to her biological parents not being able to take care of them. She started living with her grandfather and his second wife who eventually adopted her. Simone Biles took up gymnastics at an early age of 6 and went on to become the most decorated gymnast in American history. At the Rio Olympics, she won 4 gold medals and one bronze – Biles has tied the record of most medals won by an American gymnast at a single Olympics game.
Dipa Karmakar, the 23-year-old from Tripura, pushed the medal aside from our minds and took us along with her as she went racing towards her vault. She took up gymnastics at a very early age. Despite having flat feet – with her monumental effort and determination – She overcame her physical disabilities and went on to represent India at the biggest stage of all – The Olympics. Dipa mastered the Produnova – the vault of death – which most gymnast don’t even attempt, hoping to clinch a medal at the Olympics. She may have missed a medal, but it’s commendable she stood 4th in the world, putting India on the gymnastics map!
Circumstances challenged them. And they hit back. Women who won hearts in Rio.
The story of Majlinda Kelmendi is very different compared to the other Olympians. She is a 25-year-old Judo player from Kosovo – a country that declared its independence in 2008. Kosovo as a nation is going through a lot of political turmoil and despite of that in her very first time representing Kosovo in the Olympics, Majlinda Kelmendi secured gold in Judo at Rio 2016 Olympic games. It was Kosovo’s first gold medal in the history of the nation. She was offered millions of dollars to represent other countries but she turned it down to represent Kosovo. This monumental feat has made Majlinda Kelmendi a symbol of hope for the people of Kosovo.
The 21-year-old tall shuttler from Hyderabad has taken women’s sport in India to new heights. She is the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic finals of any sports in the women’s category. Being the dark horse- it was a shock when she beat the world number 2 in straight sets in the quarters enroute the finals. After a fierce battle against world number 1 Carolina Marine, PV Sindhu secured Silver medal for India – the first Indian woman to do so.
Born on September 3, 1992, in Rohtak, Haryana, Sakshi Malik has brought Olympic glory to a nation of a billion. In the dying seconds of her bronze-medal bout, she managed to turn the game around from a losing position. Sakshi became the first Indian women wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.
The women’s 5000m race saw a greatdisplay of the Olympics spirit. About 3000m into the finals – US runner Abbey D’Agostino and New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin collided and both went down. Hamblin stayed back and encouraged D’Agostino to finish the race. D’Agostino eventually hobbled over the line in last place. The two women embraced at the finish line before D’Agostino left in a wheelchair with a hurt ankle. This gesture of the two athletes has won hearts all over the world.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding OP Jaisha and her dispute with the Indian officials at Rio Olympics – but the fact remains that under very difficult circumstances the marathoner pushed herself to the limit finished the race. It was taxing on her body – so much so that she collapsed after crossing the finishing line and was nearly fatal for her. We salute her spirit and determination. OP Jaisha’s valiant effort in Rio definitely makes her worthy of a special mention.
