Maracanã stadium in Brazil has witnessed many large sporting events. Being a football mad nation, Brazil garners the most attendance for big football games. On 16th June, 1950, the famous Maracanã stadium had a record attendance of 199,854 for the world cup final match between Brazil and Uruguay. This is a record for the biggest attendance at a sporting event held in an enclosed stadium. Uruguay came out on top with a final score of 2-1

On 29th April 1995, the Rungnado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea saw an attendance of 190,000 on the 2nd day of a 2-day Pro Wrestling event. Ted Turner-owned World Championship Wrestling teamed up with New Japan Pro Wrestling to put on the largest pay-per-view in pro wrestling history. “Nature Boy” Ric Flair was the headline act.

Kentucky Derby had an attendance of 165,000 in May 2012. No horse racing event ever has had an attendance to match the Kentucky derby!

Even though England and Scotland along with Wales and Northern Ireland together form the United Kingdom, all of these countries pursue their footballing ambitions separately. And let us just say England and Scotland don’t see eye to eye when it comes to football. On 17th April 1937, a football game at Hampden Park between Scotland and England saw an attendance of 149,415. It is speculated that this is an underestimate since a lot of them were in the stadium without a ticket. Scotland won the game 3-1.

The two Lisbon based club are arched footballing rivals and their match in the January of 1987 had a large audience. A football game between SL Benfica-FC Porto on 01.1987 in Portugal saw an attendance of 135,000 at the Estádio da Luz. Benfica won the game 3-1

Federation Cup Semi Final between East Bengal and Mohan Bagan witnessed an audience of 134,000on 13th July, 1997 at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. The two Kolkata clubs are bitter rivals. To add fuel to the fire, it was a match that decided which team reaches the final. This match has the record for the largest audience in any sport in India. East Bengal won the game 4-1.

126,047 is the highest attendance at a sporting event in England. It was at the (Old) Wembley Stadium on 28th April 1923, for football match between Bolton Wanderers FC and West Ham United FC. It was the FA cup Final, the showpiece match of English football’s primary cup competition. It was the first football match to be played at Wembley Stadium. King George V was in attendance to present the trophy to the winning team. The match is often referred to as the “White Horse Final” and is commemorated by the White Horse Bridge at the new Wembley Stadium. Bolton Wanderers won the game 2-0.

A football game between Real Madrid CF of Spain and ACF Fiorentina of Italy at Santiago Bernabéu in Spain saw an attendance of 124,000 on 30th May 1957. This game was a European Cup Final between the two sides, in which the Spanish side came out on top.

Rugby is one of the biggest sports in Australia and the rivalry between Carlton and Collingwood is the fiercest. On 26 September, 1970 Australian Rules Football grand final between Carlton and Collingwood saw an attendance of 121,696 at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). The game ended with Carlton coming out on top.

The Army–Notre Dame football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Army Black Knights football team of the United States Military Academy and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team of the University of Notre Dame. The rivalry dates back to 1913, when both teams were among the top college football programs in the United States. The attendance for a game between Notre Dame Vs Army game in 1928, in the USA was approximately 120,000 at the Yankees stadium. Notre Dame won the game.
