For a fast paced and strenuous sport like basketball, it is important to be both comfortable and safe. Selecting the right shoe is absolutely necessary. However, don’t expect a shoe to transform your performance. Performance depends entirely on training and practice. None the less, the right pair will protect you from injuries and help you tackle quick changes in direction and speed. Understand the various aspects of a basketball shoe before choosing which one is right for you. Use tips below as a guide while choosing the right pair of basketball shoes.
Cushioning plays a crucial part in a shoe, protecting a player from a shock and providing flexibility as well as stability.
Power players– They need maximum cushioning for support and stability. Foam (Polyurethane) based cushioning goes best with their need as it gives extra cushioning and distributes pressure across the feet.
All-rounders – Thermoplastic cushioning in the mid-sole makes a shoe strong and flexible with moderate cushioning, making it suitable for all-rounders.
Speedsters – They need moderate cushioning with shock absorbents. Gel based cushioning is a good shock absorber, making it apt for speedsters.
High tops– Provide the strongest ankle support and stability with high ankle length. Better support comes at the cost of heavier shoes. These best suit power players who require maximum ankle support.
Mid tops– Mid- tops are shorter than the high-tops. It allows freedom of movement. Mid-tops are ideal for All-rounders who have to do a bit of everything.
Low tops– Being the lightest compared to the other two, it allows one to pick up speed faster. Apt for speedsters.
It’s more about you, than your shoe. Nobody else can fit in.
You may not believe, but your shoe size and shape can change over time. Age, weight gain, injuries, as well as repeated stress on the foot can slightly alter the dimensions of your feet. When choosing your shoes, always measure the length and width of your feet. Try on a pair. Move around and jump. If the foot moves within the shoe or if the heel pulls up from the back, try another size or go for a different pair. If your ankle or heel is rubbing the shoe, try a bigger size. The shoe should be snug, neither tight nor loose.
Choose a shoe which is light and durable. Durability depends on as much the way you use it as it depends on the make. Check for stitching errors (loose threads and open stitches). Likewise, the breathing of your shoe is important. The canvas which is made up of mesh (netted) fabric allows your shoe to breathe. Hence, protecting your feet from becoming warm during extended playing periods. Wearing a shoe with multi- directional (all over the shoe) mesh will keep your feet cooler.
It’s the outermost sole (base) of the shoe. A good outsole of a shoe is flat and moderately wide to provide stability. Choose a shoe fitted with super- flexi rubber sole for flexibility and greater grip. A thin sole best works on wooden (indoor) courts while a thick sole is good for outdoors, choose accordingly. A Herringbone (fishbone-like tread) pattern sole responds well to athletic traction.
Decide according to your playing style, cushioning and comfort. Shop around, compare prices, specifications and invest wisely.
