The shorter formats of football – rink football, futsal are played as a 5, 6 or 7-a-side match. Unlike traditional football, they are played on turfs, hard courts or indoor wooden courts. Rink football and futsal have been endorsed by many pros. It promotes quality touches and develops the players tactically, improving the overall skill of the player. Further, it is gaining popularity due to its smaller area requirements.
Here are 7 important techniques that you can work on to play better Rink Football.
Why is it Important: Close control is very important in this format of the game. Since the area in which the game is played is smaller, making most of the space is very important. Having good ball control can help you get out of tight spaces.
Tips
A good training method is to stand in front of a wall and kick the ball against it, using different parts of the foot and varying the power and curl you put on it. Do this with either foot.
When you prepare to control the ball, try to vary the part of your body (foot, thigh, head, chest, etc) you control the ball with. This will help to prepare your touch for all situations.
Why is it important: Football, in any format, is a team sport. Football without adequate passing is akin to playing with fewer men. The better you and your team mates pass, the better is the quality of your game.
Tips
The two key elements to passing in small-sided football are speed and the firmness of the pass.
When you’re waiting to receive the ball look around to see where the opposition is, where your team-mates are and where the open space is, so that when you get the ball you know what you’re going to do with it.
Awareness of your surrounding will speed up the movement and release of the ball. Then make sure your pass is firm because space is tight and defenders will be close.
It is very important to stay calm while passing. Take your time with the ball. If you get stuck play it back to the goal keeper or even just kick it out.
Why is it important: The time and space in this format of the game is very tight. Sometimes making a pass or shooting is not an option. Such situations call for individual brilliance, and dribbling can produce that magic moment. But, you don’t always need to dribble. Often teams with the quick accurate passes will dominate a team of dribblers.
Tips
It is important to know when to dribble and when not to. Looking for a teammate in a better position should always be the priority.
Practicing juggling and agility work will help you get better at dribbling. The more you practice, the better you will get at it.
Why is it important: This format sees a lot of goals in a match. So shooting becomes a key factor.
Tips
Do not make the mistake of shooting without any thought. When you get in front of goal, get your head up, look where the goalkeeper is, relax and try to hit a specific part of the goal.
Visualise yourself scoring before you shoot.
Why is it important: A major key in any team sport is communication. Giving information to teammates or receiving instruction from them about the surroundings and the position of the opponents can be a very helpful factor, especially in the smaller format where direct communication is possible over the entire pitch.
Tips
Ideally the best talker in your team will play in defence. From this position he can see the whole game – they can tell players when to pass, when they have a man on and where to move.
This helps the other players to concentrate on attacking because they are receiving instructions from a team-mate who can see everything.
Why is it important: In the shorter game, the transition from defence to attack is rapid. Hence, changing directions and quick bursts over short distances is very important. To achieve that , agility training and core strength development are essential.
Tips
• There’s no better way to improve your fitness for small-sided football than playing the game. But I’d also recommend interval training: sprint hard for a few minutes, then slow the pace for a couple, and then sprint hard again.
• Repeat this for the same amount of time as your games last. Train as though you’re always on the move.
• Doing Planks and compound exercises will help developing core strength.
Its the philosophy that underlines any beautiful game.
If you’re not enjoying your football, then what’s the point even playing? Stop and think about what needs to change. Whether it’s your attitude; the way you’re playing; or the people you’re playing with, find a solution that works for you.
Football is a great game with many physical and mental benefits you don’t want to miss out on. Hope these tips come in handy! If you have got suggestions, leave us a comment. And play more!
